Do you know Jack?

Are you one of those people who has several hundred friends on Facebook (or on whatever social networking site you use)? Or are you new to the social networking scene and have only a couple of online friends, some of whom you don’t really know that well in person?

It can be fun to accept new “friends” to your profile page, to have that instant connection and access to all of their pictures and information. But did you know that there are people out there posting fake profiles (maybe using the names of people you know) so they can get information about people they don’t know to use for hurtful purposes?

It is really important for you to know that your online friends are who they say they are. The easiest way to check is by mentioning their profile to them in person, the next time you see them.

But what do you do if you don’t know the person that well – say, if it’s your best friend’s cousin from Chicago who you met once that summer they were in town?

Check out our Fact Sheet, Do You Know Jack?, to find out how you can make sure you really know who your online friends are.

And if you have any of your own tips on how to tell who your friends are online, or how to keep your identity safe in general, we’d love to hear them!
